Day 70

Do You Say, "My Cup Runs Over" Daily?

“My cup runs over.” Psalm 23:5b NKJ “My cup overflows with blessings.” NLT my [brimming] cup runs over.” The Message

Once again David makes a transition in this verse from speaking of God preparing a table for him in the presence of his enemies and God anointing his head with oil, to saying, “My cup runs over.” At first glance there doesn’t seem to be any significance in this transition of speech but in actuality, there is a major shift in David’s understanding that has taken place. After coming to a full understanding of his Shepherd as his provider, protector, and guide, he now realizes his relationship with Him is way more than what he once thought. In this verse David takes ownership of who he really is! He is a chosen son, not of Jesse, but of God! And in the household of his new Father there is an inheritance that is rightfully his. Inheritance is always given through the bloodline of the family and David realizes he has been called to be the son of his Shepherd, God his true Father!

In this moment David realizes he has gone from common shepherd to chosen royalty! The inheritance of his King now belongs to him, including the blessings, favor, rights, authority, position, and power. It’s like he woke up and said, “Wow I am the anointed of God, chosen and set apart and all the benefits of the King now belong to me!” Of course he wouldn’t fully realize that until later, but it is in this moment where the revelation came.

In David’s day a cup running over represented two things. First it represented an understanding shepherd who provided an overflowing cup of water for his sheep, and the lengths he would sometimes go to in drawing water from a well or reservoir. This was a great act of love because the shepherd didn’t have five gallon buckets to carry the water in. He had stone cups. The second representation is a picture of hospitality. In those days when a host gave an overflowing cup of wine to their guest it was an invitation to stay with them for an extended period of time. A cup half full meant it was time for them to move on.

So with David saying “my cup runs over” he was acknowledging the love and compassion of his Shepherd and realizing his Shepherd had given him an invitation to stay with Him forever. In Psalm 16:5-11 David says, “O LORD, You are the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You maintain my lot. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Yes, I have a good inheritance. I will bless the LORD who has given me counsel; My heart also instructs me in the night seasons. I have set the LORD always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

With this understanding it is easy for us to see how this pertains to us today and our relationship with our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. Like David we have been given an invitation to stay in the house of the Lord forever and through Jesus we have been given the inheritance of the King. All the benefits of the King are rightfully ours, not because of who we are, but because of who our gracious host is. And He has given us his bloodline inheritance of all the benefits that are rightfully His. Blood and water flowed from His side on the Cross, a representation of the new wine and the Holy Spirit! Because of that act of love for us; the blessings and favor of the King are continually being poured into our lives. We are given overflowing love, grace, mercy, compassion, favor, and abundance, not just when we get to Heaven, but while we are still here on earth. In order to accept that reality fully, we have to come to the place David did and realize who we are in Christ and continually say, “my cup runs over”! We are no longer common, we are royalty, chosen and set apart by the King of Kings to inherit all His benefits!

This is why Paul said, “For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever.” Ephesians 3:14-21 NKJ

Can you see it? Do you comprehend? You are the in the bloodline of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings! You have an inheritance that is now rightfully yours! An overflowing of His abundance is being poured into your life each day! You are no longer called common! “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy.” 1 Peter 2: 9-10 NKJ

Prayer: Take time today and praise Him for choosing you and anointing you! Sing a song of praise to the King of Kings who has given you an overflowing cup of His love and abundance! Shout for joy as you fully embrace who you are in Him and thank Him for His sacrifice on the Cross so that you could become a part of the royal family!
